Welsh Woman of the Year Award

Welsh Woman of the Year is a prestigious annual event which celebrates the achievements
of women in Wales. The televised Awards Ceremony is now one of the highlights of the
Welsh Social Calendar and is attended by many well-known personalities. Last year's
glittering Ceremony was held in Cardiff's International Arena in front of an audience of 1300.

The awards are open to every woman living in Wales, regardless of age or profession.

In 1999 the Science and Technology award was sponsored by the University of Glamorgan,
an institution well-known for its engineering and technology strength. Dr Janet Wademan
received her award from Prof. Les Hobson, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Glamorgan.

Janet with her prize, a Welsh Royal Crystal Trophy specially inscribed with her details.

Janet says:

"It was a totally exhilerating experience. I was so pleased to have been nominated for the
award. Then
when I heard that I had reached the finals I was thrilled."

"The build up of the competition over the months was electric and the excitement of the Awards
Ceremony overwhelming. To have your work and contribution to Society described and
projected onto the big screen in front of so many people was a strange experience. Then to
have your name read out as the winner and the lights descend onto your table was
indescribable. I can now imagine what the Oscar nominees must be going through! An inner
strength emerged which after receiving the prize from Prof. Hobson enabled me to give an
off-the-cuff speech."

" The evening will stand out as one of the top four most memorable events of my life. I was so
happy I didn't stop smiling for over a week!"

"My message to anyone considering trying this competition: give it a go. The organisers are adept at putting people at their ease, there is nothing to lose and much potentially to gain."
